England, Wales, Ireland and France have now qualified via the Six Nations – Italy and Scotland will play off for the final two places against Spain, Netherlands, Russia, Sweden, Germany and Belgium next month. Nations with active 15-a-side denied any chance to compete for a place include Romania, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway and Serbia.

• North America. USA and Canada will qualify. No other nation in North America or the Caribbean will be given any chance to compete – this denies access to Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, Cayman Islands, and Bermuda.

* South America. No South American nations will be given any chance to compete for a place in the World Cup. So no hope us to see the players from the sevens sensations Brazil, for example.

• Oceania. New Zealand qualify automatically, Australia will play-off against Samoa. So the door is shut on Fiji and Tonga.“

Frauen-Weltmeisterschaft 2010 in England

Der International Rugby Board (IRB) hat nach der jüngsten Sitzung des Exekutivkomitees bekannt gegeben, dass die Rugby Football Union (RFU) von England die Frauen-Weltmeisterschaft 2010 in London ausrichten wird. Damit entschied sich der IRB gegen die Bewerbung des Deutschen Rugby-Verbandes (DRV), der es als einziger Mitbewerber in die letzte Entscheidungsrunde geschafft hatte. Ausschlaggebend für die Wahl der RFU war, so IRB-WM-Direktor Kit McConnell, “die extrem starke staatliche Unterstützung für die englische Bewerbung.”

IRB-Präsident Bernard Lapasset lobte die Qualität der deutschen Bewerbung und sagte: “Deutschland ist ein strategischer Schlüsselmarkt für das weltweite Wachstum des Rugbysports. Das Direktorium des Rugby World Cup und das Exekutivkomitee des IRB waren von der deutschen Bewerbung sehr beeindruckt. Wir sind sicher, dass Deutschland in naher Zukunft andere IRB-Ereignisse durchführen wird.”

Der weltweite Qualifikationsprozess für die Frauen-WM 2010 wird im Frühjahr 2009 mit etwa 90 Nationalteams beginnen. Der Vorstand des DRV hat die Einladung der deutschen Nationalmannschaft zum europäischen Qualifikationsturnier 2009 in Stockholm/Schweden akzeptiert und die DRV-Fünfzehn angemeldet.

Gleichzeitig wird sich der DRV beim Europäischen Rugby-Verband (FIRA-A.E.R.) für die Ausrichtung der Frauen-Europameisterschaft 2010 in Deutschland bewerben.

DRV-Präsident Claus-Peter Bach gratulierte der RFU für den Sieg im Bewerbungsverfahren und dankte dem IRB für die faire Zusammenarbeit während des gesamten im April 2008 begonnenen Bewerbungsverfahrens. Sein Dank gilt insbesondere auch Direktor Gary Lovejoy von der Sportmarketing-Agentur Sportfive, die die Bewerbung gemeinsam mit dem DRV getragen und stark unterstützt hat.

Germany to tender for Women’s Rugby Cup 2010

The German Rugby Federation (DRV) today announced that it is submitting a bid to host the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2010.

The DRV has teamed up with SPORTFIVE the leading sports agency to create a unique joint operation. The DRV and SPORTFIVE hope to convince the International Rugby Board (IRB) that a brand new host nation would be good for the top women’s event in world rugby and also boost the sport in Germany itself.

Germany’s senior men’s team has just won promotion to the top division in European rugby outside of the Six Nations tournament. Now the push is on to convince the IRB that a World Cup should be played in one of rugby’s fastest growing markets.

At a press conference in Hamburg on Friday, June 13th, the DRV and SPORTFIVE outlined how the rugby federation and the marketing, sponsorship and production agency would divide the different responsibilities that would face the hosts for the 12-team tournament scheduled for August and September 2010.

The joint venture is currently investigating three potential cities, Hamburg, Hannover and Heidelberg, as potential bases in which to stage a tournament that will comprise four pools, each of three nations. Eventually the German bid will probably focus on two centres.

The IRB has also received interest in staging the 2010 event from England, South Africa and Kazakhstan. Germany will present their bid document at the start of next month and the final decision on which country will host the event is expected in early September.

The President of the DRV, Claus-Peter Bach said: “ Rugby in Germany is an up and coming sport and following the success of our men’s team in winning Division Two last season we feel that this bid to host a global event would be a second big boost for the game in this country. Together with SPORTFIVE we are confident we could make a success of this exciting venture.“

Kirstin Wagner, a member of the German women’s team said: „For Germany to play against the likes of New Zealand and England here in our home country would be a fantastic experience for the women’s team and it would also be great for the German public to see in close up the strength of women’s rugby. As a team we would give everything to put on a good display against the elite.“

Richard Worth, Chief Executive Officer of SPORTFIVE, said: „All round the world SPORTFIVE specializes in helping sports federations and clubs to realize their dreams through our expertise in marketing, sponsorship, production and rights distribution. We are delighted to be partnering the DRV in this project which would open new frontiers for all concerned if Germany is given the chance to stage this event. WRWC 2006 in Canada reached record levels of global coverage of women’s rugby and we hope to further promote this exciting sport.“

Aus der Traum…

Nach 2 verlorenen Spielen geht es fuer die deutschen Frauen nun um Platz 7.

Erst scheiterten sie an den ueberraschend starken Russinen im 1/4 Finale der Plate (5:20), dann ging es im Halbfinale auch gegen Italien nicht wie erhofft aus: 0:29.
Fuer das 7er Team von Susannen Wiedemann bedeutet dies zwar ein gut gespieltes Turnier, nicht jedoch einen der begehrten Plaetze bei der 7er Weltmeisterschaft in Dubai im kommenden Jahr.
Trotz allem kein Grund, den Kopf haengen zu lassen: Deutschland hat schon viel erreicht!

Im letzten Turnier der Frauen-EM im 7er Rugby beweist das Team von Susanne Wiedemann, das es zurecht unter den Finalisten (und potentiellen Qualifikanten fuer Dubai 2009) ist:

Das es gegen England nicht viel zu holen geben wuerde (0:31), war sicher von vorne herein klar, aber gegen die im Vorfeld als stark eingeschaetzten Schwedinnen zog Deutschland souveraen mit 33:10 davon und holte sich im letzten Vorrundenspiel gegen Kleinst-Staat Andorra mit 45:7 die restlichen benoetigten Punkte als Gruppen-Zweiter.
Morgen treffen unsere Frauen im 1/4 Finale auf Russland, die in Gruppe A Frankreich 17:10 schlagen konnten.
